For Immediate Release—The Canadian Journalism Collective-Collectif Canadien de Journalisme (CJC-CCJ), the independent administrator of funds under the Online News Act, is pleased to issue its first public disclosure of fund recipients today, reaffirming its commitment to transparency.
Today’s disclosure includes 108 news businesses that have received funding up until April 23, 2025, totalling $22,193,608.09, as part of CJC-CCJ’s mandate to support a vibrant, innovative and independent news ecosystem for all Canadians.
Since its launch in fall 2024, CJC-CCJ has received applications from a broad cross-section of Canadian news outlets, representing a wide range of editorial perspectives. Funding decisions are made solely on the basis of eligibility criteria directly informed by the Online News Act and its regulations.
“Today we show our world-leading model in action, ensuring Big Tech compensates news media for their journalism equitably and fairly across Canada’s news ecosystem,” says Sarah Spring, Executive Director of the Canadian Journalism Collective. “It’s an historic investment that is empowering a broad range of voices, and setting new democratic precedents in media funding and transparency.”
Funds distributed under the Online News Act are intended to support Canadian journalism and the work of journalists producing local, regional and national news content. The goal is to ensure news businesses meaningfully reinvest these funds in Canadian newsrooms. Recipients are responsible for how they utilize the funding within the Act’s guidelines. The CJC-CCJ conducts regular due diligence to ensure all funding recipients meet their obligations under the funding agreement.
The CJC-CCJ will be providing regular public disclosures on funding through the CJC-CCJ’s website.
The full list of recipients is available here.
